I. In the Beginning
In the beginning, God spoke heavens.
Stars unfurled their ancient charts,
moonlight silvered restless seas,
winds took up their seasons,
wings knew north from south.
Rivers threaded homeward to saltwater,
roots took soundings in darkness,
branches reached for sun.
Creation held its bearings
before we thought to ask.
II. The Wayfinder
He read Heaven’s scattered lights,
star and swell, the turning tide,
salt wind against his cheek,
a bird’s flight promising land.
Beneath his hull, water spoke
in long, unbroken tongues,
deep currents drumming through timber.
Beyond that blue seam of sea and sky,
an island slept, still unseen.
He followed Heaven’s quiet signs
III. The Navigator
Then came a needle, trembling north,
salt-stiff canvas filled with wind,
brass sextant catching sunlight,
chronometer counting captive hours
He hauled Heaven to the horizon,
pinned sunlight to a line of sight,
ruled restless waters
into latitude and time.
Charts lay open, salt-stained,
inked coastlines, soundings, empty seas.
He knew his place
upon an ocean without edges
IV. The Castaway
A fraying sky.
One golden thread
unravelled across the deep.
No chart. No clock. No certain shore.
Only the swell beneath the hull,
the turning of the light,
a bird against the western sky.
And somewhere past the horizon,
He lifted up His eyes –
one constant in the wheeling sky
V. GPS Navigator
And now, a little explorer,
back-seat captain,
finger on the glass.
A small blue star moves through streets,
She calls out each turn:
Here, Mum.
Turn here.
Above, ancient stars
still chart the dark.
Moonlight trails a silver wake,
tides breathe against shore,
birds sail their roads of summer.
And God, who set Heaven turning,
who gave wandering seas their bounds,
still speaks
His ways
becoming ours,
until, beyond charts and crossings,
past every uncertain shore,
we find ourselves
in Him.
As in the beginning.
